"The Chinese and Japanese use the same animal zodiac to mark the passing of years. It takes 12 years to cycle through all of the animals. These are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each animal represents a different personality and typically have a horoscope that goes along with it. I don't particularly pay any mind to it, but it sure is fun to read sometimes! =D My sisters and I were born in the year of the horse. That's right! We are triplets! Three times the fun!
Here's what one website had to say about the Horse: http://www.chinesezodiac.com/horse.php
"Occupying the 7th position on the Chinese Zodiac, the Horse symbolizes such character traits as strength, energy, and an outgoing nature. Extremely animated, Horses thrive when they’re the center of attention. Always in search of a good time, Horses keep the crowds happy with their humor and their wit.Horses are extremely intelligent so they’re able to grasp new subjects with ease. They’re also capable of multi-tasking however they don’t always finish what they start because they’re forever chasing the next opportunity. Horses are honest, friendly and open-minded."
Traditionally in every Japanese home's entryway (otherwise known as a genkan) there is some kind of figure or sign of that years zodiac animal. Can you guess what animal it is this year? That's right! 2014 is the year of the a Horse!
This little figure came from a Japanese pattern book my husband brought home from a trip to Japan. I thought he looked so cute! The pattern too! ;)
The pattern called for traditional Japanese silks, but since there's a shortage of that in my fabric bins, I made do with colored broadcloth instead.
His little tail was made from briading a LOT of black string together. That helped to make the tail look super glossy!
This little "uma" (horse) sits happily by our front door greeting everyone who comes in!
Stitching off for now!
